How to spend one day in Dresden, Germany + Visiting the Zwinger Palace

Welcome to a day in the beautiful city of Dresden, Germany!

We spent a day exploring the beautiful German city of Dresden . During the Second World War the city almost almost completely destroyed. However, you’d never know that today when walking around this stunning city. On our tour, we explored the city and visited so many historical spots and local places as well.

The Zwinger Palace

Visiting the Zwinger Palace

We started off by exploring Dresden's Zwinger Palace. The palace dates back to 1709 and was built during the reign of Augustus the Strong and is in the style of baroque architecture. We spent a while exploring the grounds and the inside areas open to the public. It costs only 10 euros per person to see all three exhibitions. The palace is massive and there are a lot of things to see. We highly recommend you visit.

The Old Town

Spend a few hours exploring the streets of the old town

As soon as we walked out of the palace we were exactly in the middle of the old town. Even though a good part of the city was destroyed in the Second World War, the Altstadt (Old Town) has been rebuilt, it’s a beautiful old town. You won’t miss Dresden Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), the central domed church also in the baroque style, We also visited Neumarkt square, one one of the central areas of the old town. Before coming to Dresden, we thought it was a massive city. However, it is pretty small, it has only half a million people, which makes it feel very walkable.

Inside Gewandhaus Dresden, Autograph Collection

Lunch at our Hotel

We noticed that the architecture in the city is very classical, ornate and gorgeous. Moreover, a lot of things look like palaces including our hotel, Gewandhaus Dresden, Autograph Collection. We headed back there to have lunch. At lunchtime, they have burgers and in the evening they are a steakhouse. We started with the beer, then we had a classic burger and a vegetarian beetroot burger with matchstick fries. The beetroot burger had a nice soft flavour to it and a really good texture. The meat in the classic burger was cooked to perfection and it had some lettuce, onions and Wasabi mayo. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel it’s worth dining here just to see the beautiful hotel.

We stayed at Gewandhaus during our time in Dresden and would highly recommend it. It was one of our favourite hotel stays in Germany. The architecture is absolutely stunning with beautiful rooms and a great restaurant.

Neustadt District

Visit the Neustadt District

After a bit of walking, we found the bridge we were looking for. We made our way across and we noticed that it was under construction. Our next stop was Neustadt which remind us a little bit of Edinburgh.  It is definitely not a tourist spot, it is more so where the locals hang out. The last German city we visited is Berlin and it looks nothing like the rest of Europe. Berlin is a huge city. Thus, this city is small, cute and easy to walk around. You can explore it in a day if you want to. It is definitely a nightlife place, there also didn’t seem to be a lot of shops open in late afternoon. But, there are shops and cafes everywhere. We came to see a wall full of drains which were so cool. The drains come down from the top through the drains and it is supposed to play music. This is a must visit air display in Dresden. The two sides old town and Neustadt are both really different yet unique. They are worth visiting.
