The Best Greek Street Food in Thessaloniki Greece (MUST TRY)

Welcome to our Food Tour in Thessaloniki, Greece! We walked around the city for one day, explored Thessaloniki’s street food, and tried the most delicious treats.

Whenever we travel, we love to try the food of the new city we’re in and that is exactly what we did in Thessaloniki. We decided to try the street food starting with small dishes and working our way up to some bigger items. While walking down the streets of Thessaloniki we were excited to notice an abundance of delicious looking street food.

Bougatsa

We started our day by tasting a phyllo pastry called Bougatsa. It is traditional breakfast food in the city. We chose to try the traditional flavour which has custard in the middle. They did have various other options such as spinach and cheese as well as other sweet flavours. The Bougatsa was so crunchy and rich, especially with the cinnamon and sugar on top. The custard in the middle had a creamy texture. All the flavours blend perfectly together, the crunchiness of the pastry and the custard. It was sweet but not overwhelming. It was absolutely delicious.

Koulouri

Our second pick was Koulouri, which was somewhat similar to a bagel and covered with sesame seeds. It smelled amazing and was very chewy and a bit dense. It reminded us of bagels we had in Montreal. The Koulouri was crispy on the outside and doughy on the inside and the sesame seeds added a smokey flavour to it. Trevor wondered how it would taste with melted butter but overall it was worth the try.

Greek Pie

This delicious Greek pie was mouth-watering. It is a savoury pie called spanakopita. It is made of phyllo pastry and has spinach and feta cheese in the middle. It tasted a little bit flaky and not too chewy. The texture of the spinach and the saltiness of the feta cheese balances it out. Also, the crispiness of the pastry and the softness of the filling were a perfect match. This pie was definitely a win.

Gyro plates

For dinner, we had a Gyro plate made up of pork meat, tomatoes and onions, along with pita bread and a delicious dipping sauce. The sauce was made of Greek yogurt with cucumbers and dill. We did have this dish the year before and we could not wait to try it again. We found the best way to eat it was to assemble some pork, tomato, and onion in the pita bread and add some sauce. The taste of it was amazing, the pork was so tender, nicely cut and smelled very good. All the ingredients were fresh and potent especially the tomatoes and onions. The combo of all the elements was very appetizing. We did enjoy a delicious dinner.

Trigona Panoramatos

Lastly, we tried a dessert called Trigona Panoramatos that looked like little cones. It was a phyllo pastry with vanilla filling in the middle. It was cold compared to the first pastry we tried in the morning (which was hot). It was more creamy, a bit thick and really chewy. The outside was drizzled with honey and the filling was similar to vanilla icing which was sweet. It was such a treat.
